Designing Products With Purpose: Lessons From Our Work With Love Welcomes

Now more than ever, we need gifts and merchandise that aren’t just stylish, but also ethical and sustainable. Pieces that reflect both values and vision.

That’s exactly what our partnership with Love Welcomes demonstrates. This social enterprise empowers women-in-need, and together we’ve transformed their vision into a range of ethically produced products that balance beauty with purpose.

The work we’ve done side by side offers a framework for other mission-driven brands. Here’s how we approached it and how your organization can follow the same path to create sustainable, meaningful products.

Silk and cotton velvet PEACE pillows with gold embroidery.

1. Start With Your Values

Love Welcomes approached us with a clear vision: to create products that embody resilience, peace, and empowerment. Every design they develop is an opportunity to reinforce those values. Together, we brought that vision to life in a pair of sustainably sourced velvet pillows, both featuring olive branch prints, a symbol of peace. And one design is embroidered with the word Peace in gold thread.

Think about the values you want your products to express. Whether it’s sustainability, empowerment, or community, let those values guide the design process.

2. Mission-Aligned Materials

For these sleep masks, we gave pre-loved saris a second life. Each mask is made from upcycled sari fabric, meaning no two are alike. Every piece carries its own unique colors and patterns. The result is a product that reduces waste while celebrating the artistry and heritage woven into each textile.

It’s a reminder that the right material choice can transform something simple into something meaningful. By starting with fabrics that reflect your values, like upcycled textiles, you create gifts that are both sustainable and one-of-a-kind.

3. Functional Design

With these fold-up bags made with upcycled saris, Love Welcomes’ products show how everyday items can be both functional and meaningful. The fold-up bag is especially convenient: lightweight, compact, and easy to stash for when you need it most. And because it’s reusable, every trip to the store or market means less reliance on single-use bags and less textile waste overall.

When products combine practicality with storytelling, they don’t just get used more often, they carry their message further, too.

4. Collaborate on the Details

The makeup pouches are a great example of how creative design meets thoughtful production. Each one started with a digitally printed allover jungle scene, then to ensure the message stood out against such a detailed background, we added a bold screen print of the phrase MORE THAN BEAUTIFUL across the front.

Work with partners who can take your creative ideas and translate them into high-quality, ethically made goods. A good collaboration balances your vision with production expertise.

5. Keep Impact at the Core

Every Love Welcomes product is designed to provide dignified work and fair wages for women artisans. These brushed 100% organic cotton sweatshirts, printed with the words Stronger Together, embody that spirit. The end result is more than merchandise it’s a story of impact and empowerment.

Sustainable gifting works best when it carries meaning. When you choose ethical production, you’re not just making a product, you’re creating change.

The work we’ve done with Love Welcomes shows what’s possible when design, sustainability, and impact come together. Whether you’re a nonprofit, a mission-driven company, or a brand rethinking your gifting strategy, this framework can help you create products that are as purposeful as they are beautiful.
