Our rPet dopp kits help to divert used water bottles from landfills.
The Problem
Plastics often get a bad rap due to their permanence in landfills and the release of microfibers into our waterways. At our production center in New Delhi, we see the impact firsthand; the city’s massive landfills often smolder or are purposefully incinerated, releasing toxic smog into the air.
However, plastics also offer immense utility. They are lightweight, durable, and affordable. Our solution? Recycled Polyethylene Terephthalate, or rPET.
By sourcing fabric made from recycled plastics, we keep waste out of landfills and oceans. And when we buy bags or shirts made out of RPET fabric, we provide a monetary incentive to recycle those plastics, instead of burn them. What’s more, individuals in parts of India can actually sell their waste to recyclers. When we prioritize rPet over "virgin" polyester we create "demand" for this type of fabric, resulting in building a supply chain of collectors, recyclers, and weavers who then make their living from doing something that actively improves the environment.
Case Study: Choose Chicago Sling Bag
Sling Bag in 10oz rPet canvas for Choose Chicago.
We recently put this sustainable fabric to work for Choose Chicago to celebrate the upcoming 100th anniversary of the iconic Route 66. Choose Chicago reached out to us to develop a custom bag that felt rooted in the city's history, featuring artwork inspired by the Route 66 mural at Chicago's own Lulu’s Hot Dogs.
Because sustainability was a shared priority, we produced the final bags using 100% recycled polyester (rPET) canvas. This single order diverted an estimated 3,000 plastic bottles from the landfill!
Production & Design Versatility

rPET is a versatile material available in both knitted and woven forms:
- Woven rPET: Strong, lightweight, and partially water-resistant. It is ideal for items like the Choose Chicago sling bags, makeup pouches, or foldable totes.
- Knitted rPET: Often blended with GOTS-certified organic cotton to create durable, moisture-wicking apparel.

While rPET does contain microfibers, it remains a massive upgrade from virgin polyester because it utilizes post-consumer waste. To minimize microfiber shedding, we recommend using rPET for items that are typically wiped down rather than machine-washed, such as:
- Tote and sling bags
- Packing cubes and organizers
- Product packaging
Quality and Ethical Impact

Transitioning from mass-produced, conventional polyester to an upgraded, ethical rPET product is an investment in both quality and the planet. To help our clients drive this story home, we offer complimentary co-branded tags and labels. These can include a QR code or a summary of the environmental impact, like the number of bottles saved, to connect the recipient directly to the mission.
If you’re ready to give plastics a second life for your next project, we’re here to help. Reach out at hello@workshelter.co for complimentary samples of our various rPET compositions and weights.
